Choosing the Right Fence for Your Dog

Dog Fence

Many pet owners desire a fenced outdoor area where their dogs can play safely without running away. Choosing the appropriate fence for your dog is an important decision. Here are a few tips to consider when selecting the right fence for your pet:

How High Should the Fence Be?

The height of your fence should be determined by the size and athletic ability of your dog. Since a large dog has the ability to jump and climb, it is necessary to have a fence that is at least 6 feet tall. If you currently have a fence that is too small, you may want to consider replacing it.

What Type of Fence is Best?

While all fences are at risk of being chewed by dogs, materials such as wood, vinyl, ornamental, and composite tend to be durable and make good options. Combining a wood fence with a wire fence barrier can be a viable choice in some situations.

What About Invisible Fences?

Although invisible fences can be a viable option, it’s important to weigh their advantages and disadvantages. We do not sell them because they often require continuous maintenance to function properly, which is a major disadvantage. Although an invisible fence can confine your dog, it doesn’t prevent other dogs and hazards from entering your yard, and they are susceptible to being cut during landscaping and utility work.

What About Dog Play Pens?

These can be an inexpensive way to create the size you need for your pet and can easily be bought, delivered, and installed. Fence Builders makes a durable and sturdy “Big Little Fence” or dog pens in a variety of sizes to accommodate the needs of your pets.

What About Dogs That Dig?

No matter what type of fence you choose, it can be difficult to prevent digging. However, you can add dig defense products that anchor into the ground around your fence. To create an underground barrier, you can dig below ground level and install a wire fence which will then be buried. Dealing with a dog that likes to dig can be difficult. The best solution is to create a “mow strip” by digging a trench, putting in the fence posts, and filling the trench with concrete. Although it may come at a higher cost, this solution is proven to be very effective and durable in the long term.

Barking Dogs?

People choose privacy fences to prevent their dogs from barking at people or animals outside the perimeter of their home by blocking their view. The devices may not be flawless, but they can be useful. However, if you prefer your dog to alert you when unfamiliar objects are near your fenced area, a privacy fence may not be the best choice.  We also offer Bufftech’s Allegheny Series which blocks 98% of direct sound to create quiet spaces.

What about Gates?

Choose a gate that has a sturdy latch or lock and is positioned low enough so that your dog cannot pass underneath it. Fence Builders, Inc. has the ability to create a gate that is specifically tailored to your requirements.
